Calçots time

Calçotada is much more than a simple meal, it is a celebration of tradition, gastronomy and coexistence. Originally from Catalonia, this winter festival takes place between January and March and attracts locals and visitors alike.

The undisputed protagonist of a calçotada are the calçots, a variety of spring onion that is grown especially for this event. The ritual begins with the preparation of calçots on the grill, where they are roasted until the skin is charred. Then, they are served on terracotta tiles and accompanied by the famous romesco sauce, made with almonds, tomatoes, nyori and other secret ingredients that every cook guards with suspicion.

But calçotada is not just limited to this main course. It is usually a multi-step meal, where calçots are followed by a variety of grilled meats such as sausages, cutlets and meatballs. Accompanied by toast and local red wine, this meal is a feast for the senses.

Beyond the exquisite gastronomy, the calçotada is an opportunity to share moments with friends and family around the table. Laughter, lively conversation and shared stories make this celebration have a special charm that endures over time.

In Catalonia, many restaurants offer calçotada experiences for visitors interested in discovering this tradition. From restored farmhouses to family restaurants, there are options for all tastes and budgets.
